The College of Liberal Arts at Penn State University has evaluated the foreign language program at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Our goal has been to transfer courses as direct course equivalents to enable students who have earned credits at DLIFLC to satisfy the foreign language requirement (as resides in the Bachelor of Arts) at Penn State. Where we have not been able to transfer a course directly because we do not offer the language at Penn State, students may still satisfy their foreign language requirement.
DLIFLC courses with numbers of 101, 102 and 201 in the following languages will transfer as direct equivalents to Penn State course numbers 1, 2, 3: Modern Standard Arabic, French, Korean Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, German, Japanese and Portuguese.
Arabic dialect DLIFLC courses with the numbers 101, 102 and 201 will transfer to Penn State as ARAB 197 (special topics courses) because we do not have equivalent courses. Students may use these courses to satisfy their foreign language requirement. The ARAB dialect courses are Arabic Egypt, Arabic Levantine, and Arabic Iraqi.
DLIFLC courses other than the Arabic dialect where Penn State does not offer the language will transfer in as LANG courses. Students may use these courses to satisfy their foreign language requirement. The LANG courses are Persian Afghan, Persian Farsi, Pashtu Afghan, Turkish, Urdu, and Serbian/Croatian.
In a few cases, our language departments were able to equate credits beyond the basic language sequence. These include FR 202 as equivalent to FR 201: Oral communication and reading comprehension. We were able to transfer FR 301, 302 and general international (IL) credits.
A complete list of the course transfers follows:
