In 2015—2016, 21% of Penn State's students were adult learners. Penn State's definition of an adult learner is a person who:
- is 24 years of age or older; or
- is a veteran of the armed forces; or an active duty service member; or
- is returning to school after four or more years of employment, homemaking, or other activity; or
- assumes multiple adult roles such as parent, spouse/partner, and employee.
